But the Bolshevik bands were organized and would simply overwhelm small rural communities one at a time.
The countryside was the SR stronghold almost completely. While they were communists, they were a different sort than the Bolsheviks. Fanny Kaplan who shot Lenin was an SR. It is thought by some that the wounds were the cause of his rapid medical decline and death. Meanwhile, the Bolsheviks had to share the cities with the Mensheviks and even the embryonic Whites. But they were the organized faction.
