Haven't seen the movie but you don't have to go all the way back to the 30 Years War. The Bolshevik revolution also saw organized bands coming out of the cities to pillage the countryside. Bolsheviks owned the cities but had little footprint in the rural areas where the food was. Country people were fairly well armed because when the Russian army dissolved in 1917, the mostly peasant soldiers simply went home and took their Mosins with them. But the Bolshevik bands were organized and would simply overwhelm small rural communities one at a time.

Matt, I believe it's over due another of your great books release. So much material to write about in your special way making it real.
